Today the brackets were published for the 2015 U.S. Nationals which will be held in Spokane, WA, from Jan. 19-24, 2015. Ginny Fuchs, a Houston native, will be competing in the "Elite Women 51kg" weight class (112 pounds). Fuchs was the runner-up in this weight class each of the last two years. The 2013 championship fight was a split-decision loss to Marlen Esparza, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist.
Fuchs' first fight will be on Thursday, Jan. 22, versus the winner of the Karina Sarabia-Dacia Jacquez bout which will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Fuchs is seeded #2 in this tournament and, as a result, received a first-round bye.
Semifinals will be held on Friday and the championship fight will be on Saturday (times TBA).
As always, the U.S. Nationals will determine the 2015 National Champion, but there is added significance to this year's tournament with the 2016 Olympics around the corner. In the Olympics, there are just three female weight classes (112, 132, & 165-pounds). The two female finalists at each of these weight classes, at this U.S. Nationals, will automatically qualify for the Olympic Trials which will be held in October or November 2015. So a female boxer (in the 112, 132, and 165-pound weight classes), who finishes either first or second in this tournament, will secure a spot in the Olympic Trials.
