Buenos Aires, Argentina - Ginny Fuchs will square off against Sulem Urbina in a quarterfinal boxing match in the 2016 American Qualification Event. The match will take place during the evening session on March 14 (time is TBA but will not be before 4pm Central time). Fuchs, who is competing in the Flyweight division (112 pounds), needs to win her first two fights to qualify for the Olympics. This tournament runs from March 12-19.
Urbina, from Mexico, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Cristina Porozo (Ecuador) in a unanimous decision yesterday. Fuchs, who is seeded #2 in the tournament, had a first round bye.
Fuchs and Urbina fought on Feb. 5, 2016 in an exhibition match in Miami, Fla. Fuchs won that contest in a unanimous decision. That is the only time they have previously fought.
If Fuchs does not finish in the top two in this tournament, she will have another chance to qualify for the Olympic Games during the 2016 Women's World Boxing Championships, which will be held from May 19-27, in Astana, Kazakhstan. The top four finishers in Kazakhstan automatically qualify for the Olympic Games.
There are three weight-classes in women’s boxing at the Olympic Games: Flyweight (112 pounds), Lightweight (132 pounds), and Middleweight (165 pounds). Each weight-class will feature 12 boxers at the Olympic Games.
