Ginny Fuchs is set to compete in the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships

Astana, Kazakhstan - Houston boxer Ginny Fuchs will face Grazieli Jesus de Sousa (Brazil) in the first round of the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships on May 19, 2016. Fuchs' match will begin at approximately 3:15pm (which is 4:15am in Houston). <bout schedule for May 19>

Fuchs is one of 49 boxers competing in the Flyweight division (112 pounds) <tournament bracket>. The 2016 Women's World Boxing Championships, will be held from May 19-27, in Astana, Kazakhstan. Semi-final and Championship matches will be streamed at http://www.dailymotion.com/aiba.

This tournament is Fuchs' final opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympics Games. Fuchs will qualify for the Olympics if one of the following scenarios occurs:

  1. Fuchs places in the top 4 in this tournament
  2. Mandy Bujold (Canada) places in the top 4 in this tournament
  3. Victoria Ingrit Lorena Valencia (Colombia) places in the top 4 in this tournament

Bujold and Valencia have already qualified for the 2016 Olympics and are in the Americas region.

Fuchs and Jesus de Sousa have boxed once beforeon March 19, 2016, in Argentina. In that match-up, Fuchs won in a unanimous decision.

There are three weight-classes in women’s boxing at the Olympic Games: Flyweight (112 pounds), Lightweight (132 pounds), and Middleweight (165 pounds). Each weight-class will feature 12 boxers at the Olympic Games.
